My obsession with messy buns began in high school. As a cheerleader, I would rock one every Friday for football games, with my cheer bow tied around the bun. Pretty soon I was helping most of the cheerleaders do messy buns before games. I feel like it’s simple, easy and never goes out of style.
A low messy bun is a great, elegant style that’s perfect for a night out, or for going to events like weddings.
You will need:
-Curling Iron, Bobby Pins and/or a Spin Pin, Hair Spray
Here is a step by step of how I create the low messy bun:
Step 1 – Start with dry hair (dirty is preferred, meaning not freshly washed). Curl all of your hair from root to tip. It doesn’t have to be perfect, you will just be pinning it up anyways. I use a 1 inch Hot Tools curling iron.
Step Two- Pin just the back UPPER half up, but not the hair by your ears just yet. Push the hair you pinned upward, to give it some volume in the back.
Step Three- Grab the hair you left out, by your ears and twist it. Then pin it next to the hair you already have pinned up in the back. Remember, messy is good! It most certainly doesn’t have to be perfectly curled or pinned!
Step Four – Take the hair that isn’t pinned (the bottom half of your head) and twist it all together.
Step Five – If you have a spin pin, this is where you’ll need it! If not, lots of bobby pins work too. Spin pins are one of the greatest inventions ever! You can pick one up at Target or any local retailer.
Now take your hair that is twisted, and tuck it into a low bun at the base of your head. Be creative! You can make it a low bun in the center, or a low side bun! Then insert your spin pin or bobby pins to make the bun stay in place.
And there you have it! The messy low bun!
I usually pull out some little pieces here and there of hair around my face…then I hairspray away!
